License Plate Slogan of New Mexico

"Land of Enchantment" is New Mexico's defining license plate slogan. It appeared in 1941 as "The Land of Enchantment" and shortened in 1952. Today the yellow and turquoise standard plates carry it, while the chile plate adds "Chile Capital of the World" and keeps "Land of Enchantment" below. This profile appears in the list of U.S. license plate slogans.

Current New Mexico Plates

New Mexico currently lists three standard plate designs: the yellow yucca plate, the turquoise plate, and the chile plate. They are standard choices rather than a single default design.

The yellow yucca plate dates to 1991 and uses "Land of Enchantment." The turquoise plate began as the statehood centennial design in 2010, won ALPCA Plate of the Year for 2010, and now carries "LAND OF ENCHANTMENT."

The chile plate began in July 2017. It says "CHILE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD" at the top and "Land of Enchantment" at the bottom. ALPCA named it Plate of the Year for 2017.

What "Land of Enchantment" Means

"Land of Enchantment" works because it is atmospheric rather than literal. It points to New Mexico's high desert landscape, Pueblo and Hispanic cultural history, adobe architecture, and the famous quality of light that shaped the state's art and tourism identity.

The phrase first appeared on plates in 1941 as "THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT." In 1952, New Mexico dropped "THE," creating the shorter form that has lasted across decades of plate redesigns.

The slogan is also New Mexico's official state nickname, so the plate wording aligns with the state's broader public identity.

Before Enchantment

New Mexico tried other plate messages before settling on Land of Enchantment. In 1932, a plate used "SUNSHINE STATE," a climate claim that did not become the state's lasting identity.

In 1940, New Mexico used a Coronado Cuarto Centennial plate for the 400th anniversary of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's 1540 expedition. It was historically specific and commemorative, unlike the broader enchantment slogan that followed.

Chile Capital of the World

"Chile Capital of the World" is more specific than Land of Enchantment. It points to New Mexico's chile-growing culture, especially the Hatch Valley and the statewide importance of red and green chile.

The chile plate is now one of New Mexico's standard plate options. It does not replace Land of Enchantment entirely; it pairs the chile claim with "Land of Enchantment" at the bottom.
