A Subspecies Unique to the Gulf Coast
The Louisiana black bear is a distinct subspecies of American black bear that evolved in the Gulf Coast's bottomland hardwood forests. Scientists recognize it as separate from other black bear subspecies based on skull measurements, genetics, and geographic isolation. Louisiana black bears show adaptations to hot, humid climates including lighter body weight relative to northern bears and behavioral patterns suited to southern forests. The subspecies historically ranged from east Texas through Louisiana and into southern Mississippi, but Louisiana now supports the vast majority of surviving population.
